Insurgency and Insecurity - Afghanistan
the adventure
"...drinking Afghan tea in full battle gear..."
Singapore contributed actively to the security, engagement and reconstruction operations in Afghanistan, as part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) coalition. For many of those soldiers from the SAF selected to conduct operations in this rugged, conflict-torn and ancient land, it was a privilege, a challenge and an adventure.
We found the Afghans to be a hardy, proud but impoverished people. Decades of warfare, insecurity and poor governance had fragmented the naturally beautiful country and its people. Much of the populace lived in poverty, and many of the youths were without proper education or jobs. A good future was, for most, an out-of-reach dream.

In the course of our engagement and reconstruction operations, my men and I developed great respect for the Afghans and their culture and heritage. We enjoyed the many hours spent with the community elders and leaders in their villages, sitting cross-legged in their homes, drinking endless cups of tea and engaging in long conversations. Over many months, such engagements enabled us to build trust and develop many strong relationships.
I have never forgotten the many Afghan friends that I have made, and I yearn for an opportunity to return to beautiful Afghanistan for another adventure. Perhaps some day....
